Lots of Fujifilm GFX100 Misconceptions and First Impressions

https://www.instagram.com/p/BzYvvLqHiB_/

Over the past few weeks, we have all listened to a lot of hype from bloggers jockeying for access to Fujifilm while trying to sell cameras. Now that the GFX100 is in photographers hands I am pretty sure the coverage is going to change some. I want to start by saying that the GFX100 is an upgrade over the GFX50S in almost every single way and there are some amazing aspects of the camera, but no one has done the camera justice when it comes to describing its capabilities and that is probably because of the amazing image quality. I will try to relay what others have gotten wrong below, but this is all based on my first impressions over 24hrs.

Ergonomics

  • The GFX100 portrait grip has some texture to it and is not smooth plastic, but the grip could be better and the shutter button on the portrait grip feels a little better than the standard shutter button.
  • The texture of the camera is very unique and I like how it feels in my hands, but I think it will hold a lot of particles over time.
  • The new controls are not enjoyable and I miss the buttons of the GFX50S quite a bit. Fujifilm should have stuck with their winning design because this is what Fujifilm photographers will likely hate the most about the new GFX100
  • I would almost go as far as to say the camera feels more Sony-like than Fujifilm like and I constantly want to throw my Sony when it is not doing what I want
  • The camera is very heavy if you have been shooting mirrorless for years, but I think I will get used to the feel
  • The camera really isn’t that big which you can see below
  • I really wish they kept the Hasselblad quick-release connector for the neck strap because I do not want to use any other kind of clip design that could open by accident

Build quality

  • Shockingly build quality is mixed and nowhere near as good as the GFX50S
  • I understand why they did a kind of breakaway cover for the ports on the GFX100, but the way the covers are attached to the camera feels cheap and like they will lose there grip and stop functioning as an effective cover
  • The camera feels very solid/dense like a Leica camera, but not a single port cover feels like it will last for years to come

AF Speed

  • AF speed is improved over GFX50S, but it really isn’t that big of improvement for what I shoot.
  • If I had to pick a camera to compare its average AF performance to I would pick the Fujifilm X-T2 with an early firmware revision.
  • Out of my 3 lenses, the GF23mm feels the most “modern” when it comes to AF speed and it might even be comparable to a later firmware X-T2

Image Quality

  • Image quality really is out of this world
  • If you’re shooting with even light than ISO really doesn’t have a usable limit if you nail the exposure
  • JPEG’s do an amazing job of controlling noise in high ISO
  • I will push the camera more in the coming days, but image quality doesn’t disappoint and the camera will resolve things that the human eye can no see at a similar distance

IBIS

  • Fujifilm is starting to make some of the best IBIS cameras around if you’re a fan
  • I was able to hand hold shots up to 1 second with one hand while sitting in a relaxed position with horrible form

Battery Life

  • Battery life won’t be an issue with this camera
  • I wish the external charger held both batteries because charging them took a long time

Video

  • Haven’t really tried it yet, but this camera has a crazy amount of options for shooting 4k video

One More Thing

  • It’s unlikely anyone considering the GFX100 will need a new computer to edit the files because my Mac Pro from 2013 handles them just fine.

I think that GFX100 is a difficult camera to review simply because there is nothing quite like it on the market today. If you compare it to old film medium format cameras than it is light years ahead, but if you compare it to a range of available cameras that you are familiar with than the camera quickly comes back down to earth and its flaws are exposed. Being a GFX50S owner since launch has greatly influenced the way I view cameras and the GFX50S set a very high bar that the GFX100 can’t exceed in every way due to some poor choices by Fujifilm.

You can reach me if you have any further questions below or directly. I will also be answering questions in our Fujifilm GFX Owners Group.

Kai Wong: Fujifilm GFX100 Final Firmware Review

Kai Wong posted his review of the Fujifilm GFX100 using final firmware. Below are excerpts from his review:

  • Ever felt 24MP was not enough?
  • Comments on it not being a typical size medium format sensor size
  • Medium format cameras are generally meant for tripod shooting, but not with a body like this
  • Probably more than you need if you have to ask
  • Like a 1DX, but with a much bigger sensor
  • Has the X-T3 goodness including its AF algorithm
  • Functions like an oversized X
  • Has features you wouldn’t expect from a high end camera
  • The soft skin affect smooths out skin well, but only works in JPG
  • Fujifilm is up there with Sony for face/eye detection
  • Kai had trouble with his face/eye detect on the GFX100, but the people he was with had zero issue
  • The feature worked accurately on the other cameras and it was fast
  • 4x bigger sensor than X-T3, but not 4x slower just a little slower
  • Focus points cover most of the frame
  • Shifting a lot of glass at once can get behind when a subject is moving towards you
  • Soft shutter like the X-H1
  • Easily get shake free shots at 1/125th of a second
  • Miss mode and shutter speed dial because it’s easier and quicker
  • Not many negatives
  • Bad rolling shutter with electronic shutter
  • Can easily push the image 4 stops and get nice images
  • They have done it well and not half assed
  • Video footage looks great
  • Video AF works great
  • Still has a step change when using auto ISO in video
  • IBIS works great for hand held video
  • Cameras with smaller sensors have worse rolling shutter
  • Quite a big of value for your money
  • Fujifilm went the extra mile to go above and beyond to give you something special, which other companies would not have done
  • Well done to all those lucky buggers that can afford one

Fujifilm GFX100 Vi Vante and Rope Camera Strap Sale Ending Today

The Past few weeks we had an offer in our deals post from Vi Vante that ends today for their rope camera strap. Vi Vante’s Rope Camera Strap would not be ideal for the GFX100 according to the manufacture, but the Matador will be a better fit. I recently met with the owner of the company to check out some of their products and the rope camera strap does have a very nice springy feel to it unlike other rope based neck straps I own that cost more.

Vi Vante Sheetline Camera Strap Press Release
“The New Vi Vante Sheetline Camera Strap is a uniquely designed strap at an affordable price point.

The strap has built in tension relief with it’s unique design. It consists of an outer sheath that’s designed to make it look like a rope strap, while adding comfort and softness. The Inside of the strap has 5 total ropes underneath the soft outer skin. On lighter camera setups it give a springy nice feel but can easily handle heavier camera combinations as well, still relieving tension with the design.

The ends of the Sheetline are designed with extreme attention to detail, they are made with supple Napa Italian leather, finished edges, and electroplated mounting rings. An extra set of electroplated mounting rings are provided with every Sheetline Camera Strap. The Strap is 47 inches long / 120cm long recommend cross body carry.

The name Sheetline comes from Sailing. A Sheetline isn’t just rope, it’s a rope with a specific purpose. Vi Vante has currently three colors to choose from; Black, Arctic Fox, and Aqua Blue.”

When I purchased the GFX50S I hoped that all of the accessories I bought to use with it would be useful for years to come, so I put a decent amount of money into a Tap & Dye neck strap with Hasselblad clips on it and Think Tank Signature Series 13, but Fujifilm changed the GFX100 so much that I had to start looking again for a new bag and neck strap to carry my GFX100. This is not my favorite activity, and I know many like to travel light, but I like to take everything I might need with me to a shoot.

Today I received some images of the Matador and the Fujifilm GFX100 taken by Ashwin Rao that I think look pretty good. I planned to use the Matador myself and it looks like it pairs nicely with the Fujifilm GFX100. I wish Fujifilm kept the quick release lugs from the GFX50S, because I really like the quick release feature, so hopefully I won’t miss it too much on the GFX100.

I also need a new bag with a different layout inside for the Fujifilm GFX100 and will be trying the Vi Vante “Daily Driver” Full Size Waxed Canvas and Leather Bag, which you can currently save $90 off. They also have some quilted bags that are more expensive and luxurious, but I prefer a plain finish. The Think Tank 13 is a larger bag, but the way it is laid out inside doesn’t provide the space that I would want inside the bag that the Daily Driver should, but we will see once I have everything in hand.

If you remember a few months ago Vi Vante had some pretty big discounts on their products, which got me interested in the brand. According to the owner they are a small brand that tries to design products without compromise for photographers that are not happy with a lot of the over priced brand name accessories on the market.

From the products I have seen and handled the claim is not unfounded, which is why I decided to use their product with my new GFX100, so check them out for yourselves and check back in the future as I report about how they hold up for me. I am pretty rough on my bags/straps and have had many Artisan & Artist bags and neck straps fail beyond repair over the years, which is why they are no long my go to brand (Artisan & Artist made no effort to make these failures right either). Maybe Vi Vante will become my go to from now on if their products hold up and continue to evolve to suite my needs.
