DPRTV: Fujifilm GFX100 First Look

DPRTV posted their early impressions of the Fujifilm GFX100. Below are key points from the video:

  • The camera is large and heavy, but not Canon 1DX Heavy
  • Just over 3 lbs
  • Very comfortable grip
  • The vertical grip isn’t great and it’s an uncomfortable small metal design
  • The camera looks great
  • There might be a rubberized attachment for the vertical grip to make it more comfortable
  • The top and back screen are customizable
  • Top button swaps shutter speed and aperture controls
  • The highest resolution EVF Fujifilm has ever used alongside the highest MP sensor
  • Very slim removable 5.76M dot 0.86x magnification EVF
  • 24x view magnification for focus accuracy
  • Very X-T3 like AF performance
  • 16-bit RAW shoots at 2fps
  • 14-bit RAW is 5fps
  • Worlds first 100MP BSI camera
  • Lots of features to make the camera more stable like an electronic front curtain, well dampened mechanical shutter, and 5.5 stops of IBIS
  • There are a lot of handheld opportunities, but a tripod would be best
  • Dual gain sensor which will give you better high ISO performance
  • Full resolution is 4×3 at 102MP, but you still have beyond full frame resolution if you crop: 1×1 is 72MP, 2×3 is 85MP, 16×9 is 72MP
  • 1/6th of a second scan rate for electronic shutter
  • Rolling shutter can be pretty bad when shooting motion or panning with the electronic shutter
  • GFX100 isn’t great for vlogging, but great for other kinds of video work
  • Shockingly competent at video
  • Internal 10-bit 4:2:0
  • External via mini HDMI 10-bit 4:2:2
  • Eterna, FLog, HLG
  • IBIS is great for stationary video
  • IBIS can get jumpy when quickly panning or tilting
  • Face detect AF works in video, but not as well as X-T3, which could be due to it being preproduction or the lens
  • The video scan rate is much better than photo and it’s using the full sensor, which could be from pixel binning or line skipping
  • The video is good enough if you are out shooting photos, but wouldn’t recommend it as primarily a video camera
  • GFX50S didn’t feel like it could replace a full frame DSLR because things like AF performance simply didn’t compare
  • GFX100 now has all the technology that the GFX50S was missing
  • Shooting on the streets at night with the GFX100 felt like the X-T3
  • GFX100 can handle many different projects but might be better to go Full Frame for sports and action
  • Full review will come when they get production units

Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS Proof of Concept

A site that repeatedly takes my rumors without linking to me and edits their own to make it look like they are always first has called my Fujifilm X-T4 inference clickbait because he’s mad I beat him yet again. So here is some evidence to support my logical inference based on the previously posted rumor.

Fujifilm has previously stated that IBIS only works in the X-H1 line at this time because of the size of their IBIS system. They have also stated that they will bring IBIS to future cameras, like the X-T4, when they can reduce the size of their IBIS system. Most rumor sites post conjecture as fact and then edit their posts later, which we do not do here. I am always very upfront with drawing conclusions, but this is a very important one that deserves some elaboration.

Volume Calculations For X-H1, X-Pro2, X-T3
X-Pro2: 140.5 x 82.8 x 45.9mm = 533973.06 mm³
X-H1: 139.8 x 97.3 x 85.5mm = 1163017.17 mm³
X-T3: 132.5 x 92.8 x 58.8mm = 723004.8 mm³

The Fujifilm X-T3 currently has a volume of almost halfway between the X-H1 and X-Pro2, but more interestingly the X-Pro2 is less than half the volume of the Fujifilm X-H1. So if they manage to fit IBIS in the X-Pro3 than it most certainly will fit in the Fujifilm X-T4 or maybe X-T3s.

Now we can’t verify the X-Pro3’s IBIS at this time and the camera might be a little larger, but the X-Pro3 has an OVF that takes a significant amount of space inside the camera body away from electronics. Also, a lot of the weibo leaks have been spot on and it is actually where some sites have gotten their rumors for years instead of using real personal sources so it is probably accurate. These sites only started citing weibo when we started pointing out where the rumors are coming from.

If the rumor is true the only reason Fujifilm would leave IBIS out of the X-T4 would be to promote the Fujifilm X-H2. Thankfully Fujifilm isn’t known for withholding technology so I do not think they will do this, but the X-H2 might have significantly improved IBIS over the X-Pro3 and X-T4 if they all end up with IBIS in the near future.

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Coming With 5-Axis IBIS? Fujifilm X-T4?

The below details about the upcoming X-Pro 3 were posted on weibo and if true represent something exciting for IBIS fans. If Fujifilm has miniaturized their IBIS enough to fit into the X-Pro 3 than it is highly likely that the Fujifilm X-T4 and more will come with the feature in the future.
