1. Main product features

(1) Maximum aperture of F1.0 for creamy and beautiful bokeh

  • The use of large-diameter lens elements has enabled the maximum aperture of F1.0. The lens consists of 12 elements, including one aspherical element and two ED elements, in nine groups to keep spherical aberration under control. This delivers creamy and beautiful bokeh, making the subject stand out to add an artistic flair.
  • With its high resolution, the lens can be stopped down for greater image sharpness, providing comprehensive photographic versatility.

(2) Fast and accurate AF performance

  • The DC motor suitable for driving large lens elements works with the on-sensor phase detection AF system, built into Fujifilm’s digital cameras to achieve smooth AF. This allows fast and accurate focusing on the main subject even when the depth of field is shallow, which requires an advanced level of autofocusing accuracy.
  • The lens supports digital cameras’ Face / Eye AF function to capture a photogenic facial expression of a subject with accuracy. This makes it a perfect lens for portrait photography.
  • By bringing a large amount of light into the sensor, XF50mmF1.0 R WR can autofocus smoothly at near-darkness -7EV*** luminance level, an improvement on previous models’ -6EV luminance limit. Even in nightscape photography or other low-light conditions, the lens produces high-quality images with accurate focus, while mitigating camera shakes and reducing digital noise.

***AF at -7EV achieved when mounted on the FUJIFILM X-T4 and FUJIFILM X-Pro3

(3) High level of practical usability

  • As the lens is designed based on the compact and lightweight “X Mount system” it weighs only 845g and measures just 103.5mm for excellent portability.
  • The lens barrel is weather-sealed in 11 locations to ensure dust and weather resistance. It also operates at temperatures of down to -10℃. Users can continue shooting even in light rain or in harsh dusty conditions.
  • The control resolution of the manual focus ring has been improved. Its rotating angle of 120 degrees means the focus plane can be adjusted from the minimum working distance to infinity quickly with minimal movement. The ring is also smooth to operate, responding to subtle movements of the fingertips, to achieve an accurate focusing.

*Update digital cameras’ firmware to the latest version to correct color shading (non-uniformity) at F1.0.

Fujifilm GFX100 Salt Water Exposure: A Very Expensive Lesson

Lensrentals had one of its Fujifilm GFX100 get briefly exposed to saltwater and it was declared DOA by insurance, but of course Lensrentals found a little more value in the unit by making a teardown post, which you can read here. The teardown reveals a few interesting details about the GFX100 and the first big take away for me is that I will be more careful with my GFX100 and the elements in the future.

I think most photographers know how dangerous saltwater can be for a camera, but this light splash of saltwater got disturbingly deep into the GFX100, which is disappointing to me as an owner. This confirms what I have suspected for some time that the GFX100 isn’t as well sealed as the GFX50S was because there are almost no gaskets in the GFX100.

On the plus side, the IBIS unit in the camera is built to last and built correctly along with the huge shutter that isn’t physically mounted to the body at all. The GFX100 should operate problem-free for years to come if it is well cared for. We also now know more details about the GFX100 sensor stack “The sensor stack had three pieces of glass measured at 0.9mm for the top, 1.34mm total for the second sandwich and 1mm glued to the sensor. That’s 3.24mm of total glass thickness for those of you interested, not counting the two air gaps between the glass plates.”

The GFX100 certainly seems to be built like a brick, but I am personally disappointed in the lack of weather sealing in the camera. The seals in the teardown are diminutive in a camera that has enough room to house full-sized screws. Maybe Fujifilm was hoping that the internal volume of the camera would provide additional protection, but from this teardown, it looks like the saltwater wicked up into the delicate parts of the camera via surface tension and capillary action wrecking almost everything. Sure rainwater isn’t as dangerous but why take the change with a $10,000 camera?
