Fujifilm X-Pro3 Class Action Lawsuit Filled

Fujifilm X-Pro3 (Pick Your Trim): B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Petapixel is reporting that Photographer Jethro Ingong filed a class-action lawsuit in New York due to reliability and durability concerns that are allegedly the product of “defective ribbon connector cables.” The photographer particularly takes issue with Fujifilm’s advertisements that claim the camera is “durable, capable of functioning reliably and remaining in proper working condition for years to come.” The alleged defect causes “the viewfinder(s) and/or the LCD touchscreen to glitch or stop working altogether, affecting the function and capabilities of the device.”

The photographer believes that “most consumers have encountered this defect and the related issues without warning. In fact, many experienced the defect unexpectedly, once loosening or disconnection occurred. However, the defect was present and continuously evolving much sooner than noticed or experienced. This is because the ribbon connector cable mechanism is too weak to withstand normal use, frequent opening-and-closing, and switching between view modes.”

Petapixel points to multiple threads and stories that support the allegations in their coverage, and it will be interesting to see how this case plays out. I am aware of many manufacturers that have used “defective” ribbon cables that fail relatively quickly over the years, but none of them have been sued for the problem.

“The lawsuit accuses Fujifilm of unjust enrichment and for violating New York state consumer fraud acts, namely the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act and the New York General Business Law. Inong is seeking monetary, statutory, and/or punitive damages and interest as well as the costs and expenses associated with filing the lawsuit.”

DPRTV: Fujifilm The Good And The Bad

DPRTV posted a video about the good and bad of Fujifilm cameras with a lot of good and some bad. The comparison is very fair, but I think the AF-C performance is a little better than DPRTV makes it out to be. You can watch the video above or read the bullet points below:

The Good

  • They make cameras for everyone from modern to vintage
  • Variety of different handling cameras at every price point
  • They have a DSLR style, classic SLR style, and Rangefinder-style
  • Keep innovating with APS-C sensors
  • First stacked APS-C sensor
  • Great medium format sensor
  • Lots of great portrait lenses
  • Fujifilm now has great video quality
  • Fujifilm X-H2/X-H2S have great video quality
  • Fujifilm X-H2 for absolute detail
  • Fujifilm X-H2S for rolling shutter and dynamic range
  • External output and Flog2
  • Fujifilm is listening to videographers
  • Fujifilm is covering all of its bases
  • Lots of great third-party lenses now

The Bad

  • Fujifilm seems to be focusing on higher-end products at this time
  • Would like XC Primes
  • They should make pocket-size cameras again that are affordable
  • Tracking continuous AF still isn’t great, with a lot of false positives
  • It’s not that Fujifilm AF is bad, but everyone else has just gotten so good
  • Still, no tap to track in video mode
  • No native leaf shutter options for medium format

DPRTV: Fujinon 18-55mm f/2.8-4 f/2.8-4 R LM OIS vs Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN

The Fujinon 18-55mm f/2.8-4 f/2.8-4 R LM OIS is still the best kit lens on the market as DPRTV has confirmed in their comparison with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN, but sometimes the Sigma might be a better fit. Below are the details of DPRTV’s comparison for you to look over or you can watch the full comparison above:

  • Sigma 18-50mm is affordable, compact, and sharp which is why DPR considers it the best APS-C lens money can buy
  • Fujinon 18-55mm is the best kit lens money can buy
  • Both are being tested on the X-T3
  • Sigma 55mm filter
  • Fujinon 58mm filter
  • Sigma no OIS
  • Fujinon has OIS
  • Sigma has a sloppy MF ring and no aperture ring
  • Fujinon MF ring is good and has an aperture ring
  • Fujinon weighs 310g
  • Sigma weighs 285g
  • Both have similar Loca
  • AF speed is very fast for both lenses
  • Both lenses have a little focus breathing
  • Fujinon 18mm very sharp at f/2.8 with little improvement to f/5.6
  • Sigma 18mm very sharp at f/2.8 with little improvement at f/5.6, but corners are a little less sharp than the Fujinon
  • Fujinon at 55mm very sharp at f/4 with little improvement to f/5.6 except in the corners, but they improve as you stop down
  • Sigma at 50mm very sharp at f/2.8 with little improvement to f/5.6 and better in the corners than the Fujinon
  • Both lenses are similar optically
  • If you do not have IBIS the Fujinon 18-55mm is probably the way to go
  • If you do have IBIS then the Sigma 18-50mm might be a better option due to the constant f/2.8 aperture especially if you shoot at the long range
  • The Sigma is a little less expensive than the Fujinon lens unless you are buying the Fujinon with the camera body
  • It isn’t worth replacing the Fujinon 18-55mm unless you want the constant f/2.8 aperture of the Sigma 18-50mm
  • It’s amazing that one of Fujifilm’s oldest lenses can go head-to-head with a new Sigma lens
