Camera Market Interview With President of Fujifilm Holdings Teiichi Goto

The camera market has slowed quite a bit over the past few years, but a recent interview with top executives by newswitch is full of almost universally positive statements about expected growth in 2023.

“The photography business was a stagnant business, but I found a new ‘gold mine’.” Teiichi Goto, president of Fujifilm Holdings (HD), shows signs of success. The operating income of the Imaging segment in fiscal 2022 is expected to increase to 72.9 billion yen, which is approximately double that of the previous fiscal year.

The company’s Imaging segment includes the instant camera “Cheki” and the digital camera “X series.” In particular, it seems that the promotion of digitization, starting with the smartphone printer “Link Series,” contributed to the increase in earnings.

I am glad that Instax printers are picking up for Fujifilm, but I am pretty sure we will continue to see camera sales fall going into the near future since Instax printers are largely used with cell phones even though they can be paired with most Fujifilm Cameras.

Interestingly newswitch includes a statement from CIPA that they expect digital camera sales to decrease by 7.6% from 7.4 million units the previous year, which means the positive talking points are spin or camera manufacturers know something that CIPA does not. Considering how many photography websites have shut down this year I think CIPA is probably spot on and I suggest readers use affiliate links on their favorite sites as much as possible because that is what keeps our sites going.

Fujifilm XApp Returns to App Stores

It turns out that the bug that cause the XApp to be pulled the other day was something pretty silly.

“Ver. 1.0.1: Incorrect wording in the “Your country or region” selection field has been corrected.”

Anyways I am glad the app is back and it has been working great for most people including myself. While I never had any issues with the other App the new app certainly streamlines the whole process. Also more cameras will get firmware updates to support the XApp in the future including the GFX100.

Fujifilm GFX Firmware Bug Found And Suggested Work Around

Fujifilm pulled its most recent firmware updates for the Fujifilm GFX100S and GFX 50SII due to an issue with exposure compensation after the update.

May 25, 2023
We have confirmed a problem with the exposure compensation function not working properly.
Therefore, we have removed the download button for this version.
We will release fixed firmware on May 31.

A reader in our Fujifilm GFX Owners group has come up with a workaround for the bug if you already updated and need to use exposure compensation

I found a solution or “work-around” to Firmware (Fe) 2.0 disabling the Exposure Compensation button on my GFX100s. The solution “is in the menu”, as some repeatedly say.
Go to the menu, and instead of choosing “+/- when pressing” (which was the default setting from the factory set-up), now choose “ +/- on/off switch”.
With this option, you will press on your camera the +/- Exp Comp button, then turn the back wheel to make a change, and then press the +/- Exp Comp button to deactivate the back wheel from altering the ExpComp. If you don’t deactivate it, turning the back wheel will not alter your shutter speed.
Here are 2 images that help.

Introducing The New Camera App “FUJIFILM XApp”

Introducing the new camera app “FUJIFILM XApp”
Achieves seamless connectivity between a camera
Features new function for viewing a day’s shooting activities as a photo journal

TOKYO, May 24, 2023 – FUJIFILM Corporation (President and CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) announces the launch of “FUJIFILM XApp” (XApp)*1, a new app for use with the GFX / X Series of digital cameras. The app will be released for download on May 25, 2023.

The XApp is a new app that connects GFX / X Series digital cameras with a smartphone or tablet device so that users can remotely control the camera and transfer images taken by the camera to the connected device for viewing. It offers an advanced level of wireless communications stability and speed, an improvement from the current “FUJIFILM Camera Remote” app (Camera Remote). The new app’s substantially enhanced usability makes it much smoother to transfer images from a camera to a smartphone / tablet device. Images are transferred along with the shooting information such as the camera and lens used and the location of the photo shoot, which can be viewed in the app. The addition of a function that presents a day’s shooting activities in the form of a photo journal further broadens the appeals of the photographic experience provided by the GFX and X Series.
