RW: Viltrox Interview – Several New Lenses Revealed, Lab Series Lenses, and More

Richard Wong went to Viltrox’s headquarters for a tour and an interview. During the interview, quite a few lenses were preannounced and Viltrox announced a new series of lenses above the Pro series the Lab series. Below are the key points from the interview:

  • Viltrox plans to release zoom lenses but has nothing to announce now
  • Viltrox will have Cine zooms like a 22-200mm 10x cine zoom that is manual focus
  • They will also make a 30-300mm 10x cine zoom with manual focus
  • Finally a manual focus 42-420mm 10x cine zoom
  • So there are three very expensive larger 10x cine zoom lenses by the end of the year
  • The three lenses are designed for different sensor sizes, but they are big serious lenses
  • The development of one lens takes 1-2 years, but most new lenses take one year
  • Viltrox doesn’t have any plans to make camera bodies
  • Viltrox is planning a small pancake-style lens that is 20mm f/4.5 that will cover full frame and autofocus for an affordable price of around $150 that will out perform the original trio of APS-C lenses
  • Viltrox will focus on AF lenses going forward and making their lenses smaller
  • Stay tuned about L mount lenses but nothing to announce now
  • Viltrox will announce a 135mm f/1.8 AF lenses that will cover full frame and be considered a lab series which will be above the pro line of lenses
  • LAB Series > PRO
  • Viltrox plans to release 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm f/1.4 lenses that are AF and cover full frame under the LAB Series badge

Zhongyi Optics APO 200mm f/4 Macro 1X For GFX Now Available For Preorder

The Zhongyi Optics APO 200mm f/4 Macro 1X was announced a while ago, but it can now be ordered from B&H Photo.

Lens specifications:

  • Focusing: Manual Focus
  • Focal Length: 200mm
  • 35mm Full-size Equivalent: 200mm
  • Maximum and Minimum Aperture: F4.0-F32
  • Minimum Focusing Distance: 0.48m
  • Lens Construction: 11 elements in 7 groups
  • Special Elements: 3 ED lenses, 3 ultra high-index lenses, 1 extra high transmission lens
  • Aperture Blades: 9 blades
  • Filter Size : ø67mm
  • Dimensions: Approx. ø75mm x 216mm (excluding mount)
  • Weight: Approx. 1230g (with tripod mount)

Key features:

  • Apochromatic design: The APO design, which combines multiple special lenses, effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, enabling high-resolution image expression at all shooting distances. It can be used not only for close-ups, but also as a normal telephoto lens with a focal length of 200mm, which is useful when shooting distant subjects. It is also ideal for taking advantage of beautiful bokeh and using compression effects, demonstrating unique descriptive power.
  • Inner focus method: The inner focus system keeps the overall length of the lens unchanged even when the focus ring is operated, allowing you to concentrate on shooting without worrying about contact with the subject even when taking close-up shots.
  • Macro photography is possible while maintaining a distance from the subject: Taking advantage of the moderate working distance, it is possible to shoot subjects that are difficult to get close to and create lighting with a high degree of freedom.

Fujifilm GFX100 II Medium Format Camera Rumor

Photorumors published a Fujifilm GFX100II rumor. If accurate I am curious to see how many GFX100 owners upgrade and I really hope they decide to match the dials of the GFX50S, which is still the best GFX camera I have ever used. Honestly I may upgrade from my GFX100 if they do bring back the dials from the GFX50S, but if they make the camera similar to the GFX100S then I will wait for the next generation.

  • 102 MP BSI CMOS 43.8 x 32.9mm sensor (new and improved)
  • Video: 8k, 4k60p, 10 bit 4:2:2, ProRes internal recording
  • CFExpress Type B and SD memory cards
  • Improved AF
  • 8 stops IBIS
  • Removable battery grip
  • Compatible with external cooling
  • 9.4m dot tilt and detachable EVF
  • Announcement on September 12

Fujifilm is also expected to announce three new lenses together with the GFX100 II on September 12:

We also received a rumor a while ago about a GFX50RII but we haven’t heard anything since which is disappointing. I really hope Fujifilm makes a SLR style and Rangefinder style medium format camera going forward.
