CineD: FUJIFILM GFX100II Explained Product Planning Team Interview

CineD interviewed the product planning team at Fujifilm about the Fujifilm GFX100II. Below is a summary of the interview:

  • Fujifilm designed the GFX100S as a smaller than full frame medium format camera
  • Fujifilm was able to develop a higher speed GFX camera so they decided to announce the GFX100II as a higher speed medium format camera
  • GFX100II has a new sensor and processor with big capabilities
  • It is tough to make everyone happy with one camera
  • The new sensor’s readout speed is much faster than the previous one which helps with stills and movies
  • The processor is the same as the X-H2S
  • The 5th generation processor was developed for X and GFX cameras
  • The best available quality out of the box is 4k60p and 5.8k is the best resolution
  • 3 by 2 is a format choice that uses a 35mm part of the sensor so it only works open gate at some resolutions.
  • If they over sample the whole sensor it would be 4.8k resolution
  • Image format selection for GF, Premista, 35mm, and Anamorphic (35mm) that will automatically switch to the best recording formats for those format lenses
  • In anamorphic mode, you desqueeze in camera which is unique to Fujifilm cameras
  • You can dequeeze at 8k and 2x to get the best resolution
  • Some resolutions are 24/25p but other resolutions are just 24p and it is the product of hitting read out speed limitations
  • Fujifilm didn’t go with a fully articulating screen because of how controversial they have been on cameras like the X-T4
  • Fujifilm added support for their fan accessory to help deal with any over heating issues that might arise
  • Fujifilm was able to do everything needed in the camera for frame.io
Fujifilm GFX100II only has 12-bit read out even though X-H2S has 14-bit for some resolutions
  • F-Log2 D range priority will prioritize dynamic range over read out speed and the feature can add about 1 stop more of dynamic range, but it is limited to some modes
  • Fujifilm cameras being limited to 1080p120 is due to a limitation of the sensors
  • You can shoot all the resolutions on SD except for ProRes
Fujifilm just finished developing subject selection AF in video for this camera and Fujifilm will consider adding it to other cameras via firmware update
  • Auto subject selection from the X-S20  isn’t an option on the GFX but they could add it if photographers want it
  • All cameras need some noise reduction, but at low ISO there isn’t much need for noise reduction
  • Fujifilm would never recommend disabling noise reduction
  • The representative at Fujifilm believes no camera really lets you remove all noise reduction
  • You can record to SSD directly and it can support ProRes
  • When the 50S launched video was not easy or great, but now Fujifilm has high quality video that goes beyond others so try the function
  • They are sleeping better now that the camera is announced

Adding two new lenses will make the lineup a total of 20 lenses, expanding the field of photography in superior image quality by large-format sensor
TOKYO, September 12, 2023 — FUJIFILM Corporation (President & CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) has unveiled the latest development roadmap for interchangeable GF lenses designed for the GFX Series of mirrorless digital cameras, which incorporate the large-format sensor*, approximately 1.7 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor. The latest roadmap has been added with two new lenses, a prime lens that extends the ultra-telephoto region and a power zoom lens suitable for shooting stills as well as videos. This brings the total number of GF lenses to 20 to further expand the field of photography in superior image quality, made possible by the large-format sensor.

New interchangeable lenses added to the roadmap

Ultra-telephoto prime lens
This is an ultra-telephoto prime lens with the focal length of 500mm (equivalent to 396mm in the 35mm film format). The introduction of this lens doubles GF lenses’ telephoto-region coverage from 250mm to 500mm. It can be fitted with a teleconverter to extend the reach further up to 700mm (equivalent to 554mm in the 35mm film format). This makes it possible to capture a distant subject, previously unreachable with the existing GF lens lineup, allowing users to use large format sensor’s world of high-resolution and high-quality imagery to photograph birds and other wildlife as well as airplanes.

Power zoom lens
This is a motorized zoom lens that covers the standard range of focal lengths, suitable for shooting stills as well as videos. It is fully motorized even for operating iris, focus and zoom to achieve precise and smooth movements, thus delivering descriptive and expressive performance that meet professional needs.

Fujifilm will continue to enhance its lens lineup to boost the appeal of the GFX system while delivering the appeal of photography and the joy of shooting photography.

* An image sensor that measures 55mm diagonally (43.8mm x 32.9mm) and is approximately 1.7 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor

Introducing GF55mmF1.7 R WR
Setting a new standard in GF interchangeable lenses for the GFX Series of mirrorless digital cameras
A large-aperture prime lens that brings out the appeal of the large-format sensor

TOKYO, September 12, 2023 — FUJIFILM Corporation (President & CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) is pleased to announce the release of the “FUJINON Lens GF55mmF1.7 R WR” (GF55mmF1.7 R WR) on September 28, 2023. The new lens joins the lineup of GF lenses, i.e. interchangeable lenses for the GFX Series of Fujifilm’s mirrorless digital cameras equipped with the large-format sensor* measuring 1.7 times that of the 35mm full-frame sensor.

The GF55mmF1.7 R WR is a large-diameter prime lens with the standard focal length of 55mm (equivalent to 44mm in the 35mm film format). The large-format’s enriched descriptive capability is combined with the creamy bokeh characteristic of the large maximum aperture makes the main subject stand out against a blurred background. The lens’s focal length is the same as the diagonal measurement of GFX Series’ signature large-format sensor and gives the field of view close to that of human vision to create a natural perspective. It sets a new standard in GF lenses, which brings out the best of large-format cameras.

Introducing GF30mmF5.6 T/S and GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro
Long-awaited tilt-and-shift lenses for the GFX Series of mirrorless digital cameras

TOKYO, September 12, 2023 — FUJIFILM Corporation (President & CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) is pleased to announce the release of the tilt-and-shift lens “FUJINON Lens GF30mmF5.6 T/S” (GF30mmF5.6 T/S) in October 2023, and the tilt-and-shift macro lens “FUJINON Lens GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro” (GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro) in November 2023. The new lenses join the lineup of GF lenses, i.e. interchangeable lenses for the GFX Series of Fujifilm’s mirrorless digital cameras equipped with the large-format sensor*1 measuring 1.7 times that of the 35mm full-frame sensor.

The GF30mmF5.6 T/S and GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro combine the tilt function of tiling their optical axis and the shift function of moving their optical axis in parallel to alter how the optical axis relates to the imaging plane and intentionally manipulate areas in focus and perspective. This caters to the needs of professional photographers who want to explore composition and shooting positions freely in architecture, landscape and commercial photography, broadening the range of shooting that takes advantage of GFX Series’ superior image quality.
