FUJIFILM Instax Mini Evo Shipments Began and Some Thoughts About Experiential Photography / Videography

instax mini Evo Cinema: B&H Photo / Amazon

The Fujifilm Instax Mini EVO Cinema has begun shipping. I ordered one myself because of how much I enjoyed the Fujifilm X Half, and I think Fujifilm is on to something that no other manufatures seems to understand at this time.

Most photographers lust after owning a Leica M camera, but very few can justify the expense, and those who can have a hard time explaining why they did. For me, owning a Leica M camera provided an unmatched experience that made photography enjoyable in a way that no other camera matched. I think Fujifilm has always been the closest to understanding what makes Leica special, which is why Fujifilm has many classically designed cameras compared to other manufacturers.

Photography as an experience is where the industry is headed, in my opinion. Most “photographers” are happy with the results from their camera phone, but the experience of taking photos and video with a camera phone is not a good one, especially compared to old mechanical cameras, which is why classic cameras are becoming popular again. Fujifilm is jumping on this trend, but in a very different way by providing users with faux mechanical experiences that influence the experience of creating photos and video in a way that we can’t really objectively measure and compare.

Back when I shot Leica exclusively, I often commented that I would love to have a more mechanical digital M camera with a shutter that was mechanically powered and maybe even a capacitor to power the sensor that would be charged by a mechanical winder. Today, I believe a company like Fujifilm would be more likely to create this kind of camera than any other manufacturer because they are the only manufacturer currently trying to provide us with new experiences to change how we create photos/video, which is why I bought the EVO Cinema, and I can’t wait to see where they go from here.
