DPReview is compared the three affordable medium format options and the Fujifilm GFX 50S did well:
- The Pentax 645Z has a good track record of ruggedness, but the X1D and GFX are still unknowns.
- Pentax 645Z gets about 650 shots per charge, while the GFX gets 400+ and the X1D does significantly worse.
- All three are easy to control with gloves on, but the GFX has some small buttons.
- The X1D and GFX have minimal shutter shock because of the electronic first curtain shutter on the GFX and leaf shutter on the X1D, while the 645Z has a mirror up mode.
- The X1D is the lightest followed by the GFX, which is 200g heavier.
- The GFX has very direct controls, while the 645Z can take time to learn and the X1D will require some menu navigation.
- The GFX and 645Z have the best AF coverage.
- The X1D wins flash sync speed due to the leaf shutter syncing up to 1/2000th with everything.
- The GFX has the fastest autofocus, followed by the 645Z and then the sluggish X1D.
- The GFX offers the best JPEG/TIFF/Starting point for delivering images.
- The Pentax 645Z is the immediate choice for anyone who wants an optical viewfinder.
- The Hasselblad X1D’s for high sync speeds.
- Fujifilm GFX 50S for faster focus and greater endurance.
