The retro camera market and Fujifilm’s traditional designs have helped Fujifilm knock Nikon out of its long-held spot in third place behind Sony and Canon, according to DCLife. This comes several years after Sony broke Canon and Nikon’s duopoly.
Canon has shipped 4.5 million units, securing a 45.7% market share. One company alone boasts a market share of nearly 50%, and the top three companies (Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm) alone account for over 80% (82.1%) of the global market share, creating an oligopoly. What is particularly noteworthy is that Fujifilm has overtaken Nikon to jump to third place. It remains to be seen whether Fujifilm will aim to match Sony’s shipment volume in the future. If Fujifilm reaches the 1.5 million unit level, it may no longer be seen as having a conservative shipment system.
- Canon… 4.5 million units (45.7%)
- Sony… 2.42 million units (24.6%)
- Fujifilm… 1.16 million units (11.8%)
- Nikon… 880,000 units (8.9%)
- Panasonic… 430,000 units (4.4%)
- Ricoh Imaging… 210,000 units (2.1%)
- OM Digital… 150,000 units (1.5%)
It certainly would be interesting if Fujifilm increased its volume to deliver 1.5 million cameras next year, as DC.Life suggests. Someone could end up being a big loser if Fujifilm starts shipping in higher numbers than they already are with a full lineup of freshly refreshed retro cameras.
