Fujifilm X100VI Silver and Black:
B&H Photo / Amazon (Silver : Black) / Moment / Adorama
Camera sales have been falling for years thanks to cameraphones that consumers deem good enough continue to flood the market so most manufacturers have been able to fulfill the demand behind hot cameras by shifting capacity around, which is what Fujifilm half already done for the X100VI to reach a run rate of 15,000 cameras a month, but that may not be enough.
In China alone, there are reports of 580,000 preorders in a lottery format from one large retailer from asobinet that heavily favors the silver body with 440,000 preorders against 130,000 black. There is also a report on weibo of 480,000 preorders which is another crazy claim. Depending on one Fujifilm decides to allocate cameras it could take years to fulfill the current amount of preorders at a run rate of 15,000 cameras or 180,000 a year.
Hopefully, Fujifilm can allocate more capacity to the Fujifilm X100VI line to avoid profiteering in the after-market, but if they can’t it might be time to consider expansion. There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for Fujifilm X100 demand and I bet Fujifilm would have had more luck shifting demand to other product lines if they had just preserved their “retro” exposure triangle first design for a few more years instead of pushing PSAM dials on so many of their camera lines because Fujifilm’s “retro” design is exactly why the X100 line has caught fire.
