Camera Market Interview With President of Fujifilm Holdings Teiichi Goto

The camera market has slowed quite a bit over the past few years, but a recent interview with top executives by newswitch is full of almost universally positive statements about expected growth in 2023.

“The photography business was a stagnant business, but I found a new ‘gold mine’.” Teiichi Goto, president of Fujifilm Holdings (HD), shows signs of success. The operating income of the Imaging segment in fiscal 2022 is expected to increase to 72.9 billion yen, which is approximately double that of the previous fiscal year.

The company’s Imaging segment includes the instant camera “Cheki” and the digital camera “X series.” In particular, it seems that the promotion of digitization, starting with the smartphone printer “Link Series,” contributed to the increase in earnings.

I am glad that Instax printers are picking up for Fujifilm, but I am pretty sure we will continue to see camera sales fall going into the near future since Instax printers are largely used with cell phones even though they can be paired with most Fujifilm Cameras.

Interestingly newswitch includes a statement from CIPA that they expect digital camera sales to decrease by 7.6% from 7.4 million units the previous year, which means the positive talking points are spin or camera manufacturers know something that CIPA does not. Considering how many photography websites have shut down this year I think CIPA is probably spot on and I suggest readers use affiliate links on their favorite sites as much as possible because that is what keeps our sites going.
