TCSTV: Fujifilm GFX100 Studio Photography Interview with Jason Eng
I’m a day one adopter of the GFX system and I can verify that once you shoot a GFX camera it is impossible to not compare it to others because it really is a cut above the rest. That being said GFX is not necessary, but it does provide you with many additional creative opportunities that can help you make shots and recover shots that might otherwise be impossible. There is nothing quite like GFX and when I use cameras other than my GFX100 I always find myself wondering how much better it might have looked if I just shot it with my GFX, to begin with. Below is a summary of the above video interview:
Jason’s assistant wanted to get a new camera system so they looked at Canon and the GFX was the same price so they compared it to the Sony they were using and it blew them away even at laptop screen size
GFX Camera details and gradation are unmatched
The compression and distortion on the GFX are useful to work with
The Fujifilm GFX100 calls back to classic professional cameras that had fixed vertical grip
GFX100 has a fully usable AF system that doesn’t miss.
The GFX100 vertical grip is great for him
The Sony was great because it was a small half body that you can just throw in your bag and go which reaches a larger target audience.
Today things are compact so you can go either way
The Fujifilm classic film presets come right in to capture one without doing a destructive edit
Color has been hard in the digital world and Canon was king until Fujifilm came along
Fujifilm was the only company to match Canon’s color, but he couldn’t see himself shooting APS-C, but now there is GFX
GFX has great skin tones and reds that are rich and deep
GFX has a lot of great lenses, but adapting legacy lenses to the GFX is fantastic
Adapting lenses for artistic portraits or just yourself gives you some of the softness that film had and it helps the simulations
Pro-level cameras are around 5k and dropping the GFX to just under that is a game-changer because traditionally you would spend 30k for what GFX gives you
Once you see the color and shadow tonality range that the GFX is capable of is impossible to unsee
100MP doesn’t have to be about giant print ads it is about all the extra information
