B&H Photo launched its Mega Deal Zone Savings today with over 1200 items discounted and it will run through the 29th. Fujifilm Also extended their savings until January 23rd. There aren’t many GFX50R left so if you want one grab one of the last new units left since retailers like B&H Photo have marked the camera as discontinued since selling out.
GFX50R Discontinuation Thoughts
I have been thinking about why Fujifilm discontinued the GFX50R without a clear replacement in sight and it probably comes down to supply chain shortages and how Fujifilm is increasingly marketing its cameras to DSLR users. The Fujifilm GFX50R sold very well especially when it was on sale, but GFX50S II is a more attractive camera for DSLR photographers new to Fujifilm like the GFX100S was for many that didn’t like the GFX100.
With the current supply chain shortages, it is probably smart to target new customers over existing ones, to sell more glass, so Fujifilm likely cannibalized the sensors allocated for the GFX50R to produce more GFX50SII cameras. If I am correct I hope Fujifilm decides to produce GFX cameras with more dials in the future for those of us that prefer classic cameras, if they don’t Leica could canalize users from Fujifilm for a change.
The GFX50S was just about perfect and GFX cameras that have been released since are all a bit flawed operationally for photographers that prefer a classic layout. The GFX50S’ only shortcoming was the heat sink hump that Fujifilm was able to resolve in later cameras. So let’s all hope the next GFX is a great one for fans of classic Fujifilm and classic cameras.
