DPRTV just released its review of the Fujinon XF50mm f/1 R LM WR the fastest AF lens ever made and it exceeded expectations in many ways. It’s also interesting that they came to the conclusion that the XF33mm f/1.0 would have complimented the XF56mm f/1.2 well and might have been a better fit than the XF50mm f/1, which is the conclusion I have come to about upgrading, but I still might anyways just for the weather resistance.
Lenses with apertures this wide usually have optical compromises
The XF56mm f/1.2 is very similar to the XF50mm f/1
Had to shoot with the electronic shutter to shoot wide open during the day
The lens looks big but it doesn’t feel that large in person
845g or 40 budgees… or 0.42 Noct
Feels like an 85mm f/1.4 on a full-frame cameras
The minimum focus distance of 2.25′ / 0.6M which is a bit far for some subjects
AF motor is pushing a lot of glass and its not a problem for studio or portrait, but borderline for faster subjects on the street
Very smooth well-behaved bokeh wide open with no flaws except cats eye at the corner of the frame which goes away by f/2
When you stop down to f/2.8 the 9 bladed aperture has some polygonal shape
AF can be a little erratic with current firmware
LoCA in the foreground has a pink cast and the background has a green cast even at f/2
Very clean of flare and ghosting
Not very sharp at f/1, but sharpens up by f/2.8
Center to corner sharpness is consistent
This is a portrait lens and you don’t always want razor-sharp results plus you can sharpen up in post
No visible breathing with this lens for video
This will be a popular lens for cinema
If you have the XF56mm f/1.2 it is probably not worth upgrading to the XF50mm f/1
The XF33mm f/1.0 would have complimented the XF56mm f/1.2 well and might have been a better fit than the XF50mm f/1
