Fujifilm GFX100 Technical Analysis Part 5

Jim Kasson has decided to go past his conclusion from our past technical analysis posts, which was a bit unexpected, but very welcome because no one has done more independence GFX camera testing than him at this level. You can catch up on what we have covered in theses four posts first round-up here, the second round-up here, the third round-up here, and the fourth round-up here. Below you can find his most recent tests.

The Last Word – Fuji GFX 100 IBIS performance with 32-64 mm zoom

Performance is acceptable even at 1/5 second, although there are a some poor outliers there.Interpolating, the mean IBIS results at 1/5 second look about as good as the non-IBIS mean at 1/35. That’s a ratio of 7, or just under 3 stops. If we look at the mean-minus-sigma numbers, to get the 1/5 second IBIS sharpness, you’d need to use a shutter speed of about 1/40 second, which is close to the same ratio.

The Last Word – Fuji GFX 100 IBIS at slow shutter speeds with the 110/2

It looks like high shutter speeds are nothing to fear with IBIS on, even if IBIS isn’t doing any good there. It also looks like IBIS is safe down to 1/40 second, or slower than one over half the focal length. I expect that the camera will be even more stable in single shot drive mode, instead of the continuous mode I tested. Standing is about the worst commonly-used shooting position. I will test some more.

The Last Word – Fuji GFX 100 IBIS — 110 mm, AF-C

Without IBIS, anything below 1/200 is iffy. With IBIS, all the shots look good.

The Last Word – Sony a7RIV with pixel-shift vs Fujifilm GFX 100

The GFX 100 has received more sharpening. Imaging Edge used to brutally oversharpen the a7RIII 4-shot pixel-shift images, but not anymore. The Sony image has about the same resolution. The big difference is the impressive reduction in aliasing provided by the pixel-shift technology.
